What is a Hipster?

'Hipster' is a word used in San Francisco with the same frequency as other common day to day frases such as 'is it organic?', 'my cell phone does not have coverage', 'no, the Giants lost'  and 'it's from Trader Joe's'. This might come as a shock to you, but even yours truly have been at times labeled as being part of this sub-culture. Outrageous, isn't it?

Let's start with a formal definition. 'Hipsters' are 'a subculture of men and women typically in their 30's that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock and witty banter. Hipsters reject the culturally-ignorant attitudes of mainstream consumers, and are often seen wearing vintage and thrift store inspired fashions, tight-fitting jeans, old-school sneakers, and sometimes thick rimmed glasses (From the Urban Dictionary).

So let's check. I am am man, so that is a start. Also in my 30's, not much to do about that. I do read Pitchfork, which automatically converts me into a indie-rocker, putting me in the pre-approved fast lane towards Hipsterism. I do wear thick rimmed glasses, however not only 'sometimes', but 'all the time' as I would bump into stuff otherwise. I definitely use tight-fitting jeans, although the most vintage thing about the rest of my wardrobe is probably my age. I have no idea what progressive politics means, and love the sound of the words 'witty banter'. They probably mean 'being ironic', but I wouldn't know as I am part of the Generation X. Too bored to care.

There is one thing missing though. After spending a weekend of what has to be the highest concentration of hipsters in modern times at the Outside Lands Festival in the Golden Gate Park, we came to the conclusion that to melt in with the rest of the 30-something, tight fitting jeans wearing, organic food eating, independent culture loving hipsters, it is key to sport a moustache. Nothing says 'irony' louder than a moustache.  

Luckily that has an easy solution. So what do you think, do I cut it?
