Amoeba Records

Hi, my name is Markus Renström and I am a record nerd. It all started a long time ago when I bought my first record ever. I still remember, I had gotten a voucher for my birthday and went to one of the few record stores at home to buy what was going to be my first record ever. I was nervous, don't really know why. Maybe because the department store was all lit up and nice, but the record store was darker and full of people flipping vinyls (yes, I am that old...). It seemed like a religious place almost. What did I buy? Michael Jackson - Thriller.

The years have gone by and I have always bought records, and sold records, and given them away. I am very picky, it is a quality over quantity thing. Lately I have started to buy more records, just from the fact that they are getting cheaper and cheaper. So please you all, keep buying MP3 and like that we record nerds don't have to spend that much money!

Amoeba Records in Haight-Ashbury

I used to go to Tower Records in San Francisco, but they closed (Rest in Peace), so I had to convert myself to another religion. Luckily in Haight-Ashbury there is this lovely place called Amoeba Records, said to be the largest independent record store in the world. It is heaven on earth; tons of new, old, used, weird, heart-shaped and hard to find stuff. I allow myself a trip every now and then to indulge in records.

The art of flipping disks

What did I get this time?

An Anthology of Big Band Swing
Bebop! - Volume 3
The Beatles - Sgt Pepper Lonely Heartclub band (my first the Beatles record!!!)
The Black Keys - Rubber Factory
Beach House - Devotion
Jarvis Cocker - The Jarvis Cocker Record
Miike Snow - Miike Snow
Van Morrison with Georgie Fame & Friends - How Long has this been going on
Teenage Fanclub - Songs From Northern Britain
The Tallest Man on Earth - The Wild Hunt
The Phonograph Entertains - A Collection of Vintage Popular Recordings (1903-1924)

Kind of reflects my musical taste; "indie-rocker-that-has-grown-old-and-started-listening-to-jazz".
